Dubai Announces Ambitious Metro Plans to Add More Than 70 New Stations by 2040

2 days ago (01 July 2024)

Doubling the Number of Metro Stations:

The Government of Dubai has announced ambitious plans to double the number of Dubai Metro stations by the year 2040. Currently, the Dubai Metro has 64 stations covering an area of 84 square kilometers. With these new plans, the number of stations will reach 140, covering an area of over 228 square kilometers by 2040.

Immediate Goals:

In the near future, by 2030, the metro will expand to 96 stations covering an area of 140 square kilometers. These plans are part of the Executive Council's efforts to develop areas surrounding metro stations, reduce carbon emissions in the emirate to 16 tons per capita, and bring more economic opportunities to the city.

Enhancing Population and Economic Growth:

The plan also aims to increase population density around metro stations and add more residential, commercial, office, and service spaces around the stations.

Details of New Stations:

While the Government of Dubai has not yet disclosed the exact locations of all the new stations, we have a good idea of where they are likely to be. Currently, the Dubai Metro has two lines in operation. The Green Line stations are in Bur Dubai and Deira in the old town, while the Red Line connects the old city and airport to Downtown, Dubai Marina, and Expo 2020 in the southwest.

Current Expansion Plans:

Work is currently underway on the Dubai Metro Blue Line, which will stretch over a total of 30 kilometers, with 15.5 kilometers running underground and 14.5 kilometers above ground. The project encompasses 14 stations, including 3 interchange stations, and will integrate with the existing Red and Green Lines.

Expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport:

The plans for the development and expansion of Al Maktoum International Airport to eventually make it the world's largest capacity airport will include metro stations within it.

Potential Future Lines:

Previously mooted plans have included three new lines throughout Dubai, but little has been officially said about them for a number of years. The Purple Line was said to cover a route from the north to the south of the emirate, with Al Maktoum International Airport being one of the key areas included.

The Gold and Pink Lines:

The Gold Line and Pink Line were believed to serve routes from the west to the east of the emirate. It has not been confirmed whether these lines will be included in the overarching Dubai Metro plans.

Dubai remains committed to enhancing public transport infrastructure to improve the quality of life, reduce carbon emissions, and bring more economic opportunities. Stay tuned for more updates on this massive project.
